A close loss again for Dowlais this week with a 15-10 home loss to Bridgend Athletics.

As expected for a game as low scoring as this one, the first half was one of many chances for both sides, but the game quickly soured as Bridgend scored an early try, followed by a penalty kick after another fierce but foiled campaign in the Dowlais twenty-two.

Dowlais spent the rest of the first half toiling away at the Bridgend line in a desperate attempt to catch up before the point gap could widen any more.

As the first half drew to a close and a penalty kick from Nathan Pritchard was swept into the post by the wind, it looked as though Dowlais would be fighting an uphill battle in the second half. But as the final minutes drew and Brigdend received a yellow card, Dowlais struck while the iron was hot and a fierce drive from the Dowlais forwards in the Bridgend twenty-two secured Dowlais a try, touched down by Chris Williams.

Dowlais moved into the second half 8-5 down with momentum and before long were feet away from the Bridgend try line for almost quarter of an hour. Despite their many attempts over that time, nothing came from the attempts and in minutes Dowlais was seemingly irreparably stuck on the defense.

After minutes of trying and failing, it seemed the inverse proved true for Bridgend and they scored a converted try, effectively putting hopes of victory in the dust.

Most of the rest of the game passed rather uneventfully, with one side trying to strike back with their limited time and the other trying to pull even further ahead than their 15-10 lead.

An unconverted try from Cameron Trowbridge in the final minutes softened the blow of the defeat slightly but it simply came 30 minutes too late and for now it seems like Dowlais’ cup dreams for this year are at an end.
